NCCC STUDENT WINS MISS DEAF CONNECTICUT CROWN

Jessica Tanner, a student at Northwestern Connecticut Community College was crowned Miss Deaf Connecticut on Saturday November 12 at the Miss Deaf Connecticut pageant during the Connecticut Association of the Deaf (CAD) Conference held in Stratford CT.  Jessica, who is a goodwill ambassador and spokesperson for CAD is now eligible to compete in the Miss Deaf America Pageant that will be held during the 48th Biennial National Association of the Deaf (NAD) Conference from June 29 through July 3, 2006 in Palm Desert California.

The Miss Deaf America Pageant provides women who have won their state titles the opportunity to compete to become a goodwill ambassador and spokesperson for NAD.  The winner is proclaimed NAD Miss Deaf America who then embarks upon a two-year reign touring the country and speaking to diverse groups.

Jessica, who is currently President of two student organizations, The Northwest Deaf Club and the Northwestern Connecticut Community College Club Council, attended the American School for the Deaf until she was a junior in high school, before transferring to Mascoma Valley High School in Canaan, New Hampshire.  She returned to live in Newtown CT. with her grandparents and enrolled in the Collegiate Education for Deaf & Hard of Hearing Persons (CEDHH) at Northwestern in January 2005.  She is now a Winsted resident.

Jessica Tanner, Miss Deaf CT

Collegiate Education for Deaf and Hard of Hearing Persons program at NCCC sponsored Jessica’s entry and participation in the CAD pageant and provided support throughout the competition.  She was chaperoned by Maureen Chalmers, Communications Specialist in CEDHH, and Roxanne Norway-White, CEDHH Interpreter-Tutor coached her for her Talent Award winning presentation of a poem, Full Moon’s Child that Jessica wrote.  Other CEDHH staff members also contributed to Jessica’s wardrobe, makeup and hair styling needs.

Recalling the moment she heard her name announced as Miss Deaf Connecticut, Jessica says, “I felt exhilarated, honestly, I worked so hard and I was happy that my work paid off,” she says that during her reign, she “hopes to be a role model and to build upon her leadership and presentation skills.”  She also expressed appreciation for “the wonderful support I have received from the staff and I am hoping I can make everyone proud of me.”

The Liberal Arts major believes that her experience in leadership and the positive message she delivered during the pageant may have contributed to her victory.  During her pageant presentation, Jessica spoke about her involvement in a project Can by Can, which is raising money to build a school for the deaf in Nigeria. In referring to Can by Can, she said, “Success is not measured in numbers, but by the purpose itself.”

Jessica Tanner, reigning Miss Deaf Connecticut, whose favorite saying, “It gives me a deep comforting sense that things seen are temporal and things unseen are eternal,” (a quote from Helen Keller), will be scheduling appearances and making presentations of her Can by Can project to civic and corporate groups.

She will also need financial support from CAD for her and a chaperone’s trip to Palm Desert for the Miss Deaf America Pageant.  The cost is expected to be approximately $6,000. Mark J. Myers, CAD President and CEDHH Director will be arranging Jessica’s Can by Can appearances and presentations; he can be reached at (860) 738-6382 or at mmyers@nwcc.commnet.edu.
